Scaramouche Jones – Justin Butcher

Twenty-three years on from its acclaimed premiere, starring the late, great Pete Postlethwaite, Scaramouche Jones has been produced, performed & translated all over the world. Olivier-Award winning director Guy Masterson-Mastroianni joins forces with writer-performer Justin Butcher to create a sublime, unforgettable experience - the haunting and evocative set and sound designs by Ashley Martin-Davis and Adam Cork are enhanced by a richly textured, poignantly atmospheric video design by award-winning artist and animator Damian Hale.

11pm Millennium Eve: centenarian clown, Scaramouche, breaks fifty years’ silence to give his final performance, charting a bizarre odyssey through crumbling empires, comic misadventures and the 20th century’s darkest episodes, revealing the loves, brutalities, ecstasies and tragedies beneath his seven white masks. As Scaramouche unveils his life, he takes us on an epic, poetic, profoundly moving voyage. An enchanting performance of supreme physical and vocal virtuosity, combined with ravishing designs create a world of indelible images, a glorious story sumptuously told.

The 20th anniversary production of Scaramouche Jones, at the Wilton’s Music Hall, London, was finalist in the 2022 Off West End Awards, in three categories: Best Production, Best Video Design & Best Lead Performance. Justin Butcher won the 2022 Off West End Award for Best Lead Performance.

Justin Butcher read Classics at Oxford, trained subsequently at Drama Studio London, and has worked all over the world as playwright, actor, director, musician and producer in theatre, film, TV and radio, and as creative consultant to the business, government and voluntary sectors across the UK, Europe, Middle East and East Africa. His extraordinary biography takes in award-winning film, TV, theatre, radio, books and human rights advocacy, working with many of the most recognisable names in the creative arts.
